Ask the Expert: Your Used Car Questions Answered
Buying a used car is one of the biggest financial decisions most people make, and it comes with a lot of questions. Matt Symes, General Manager of Toyota of Pasadena, has heard them all. Below, Matt answers the questions he gets most often from used car shoppers -- covering vehicle history, financing and warranty coverage -- so you can walk into our dealership informed and confident.
Our Expert Answers Your Used Car Questions
01
How do I know if a used car has been in an accident or has hidden damage?
Every used vehicle we sell comes with a full CARFAX® vehicle history report. This report details any reported accidents, number of previous owners, registration history and whether the title is clean. That said, a CARFAX® is a starting point -- not the whole picture.
I always encourage buyers to have the vehicle independently inspected by a trusted mechanic before committing. We're happy to accommodate that. If a dealership won't let you do that, that's your first red flag.
02
What is a Toyota Certified Used Vehicle, and is it worth it?
Toyota Certified vehicles go through a rigorous 160-point inspection (180 points for hybrids), must meet specific age and mileage requirements and come with factory-backed comprehensive and powertrain coverage plus roadside assistance.
For buyers who want peace of mind without paying new-car prices, a Toyota Certified Used Vehicle is one of the smartest ways to buy. You're essentially getting a vehicle that's been held to a higher standard, backed by Toyota itself.
03
Does the car have any open recalls?
We check for open recalls as part of our used vehicle process, and you can also verify this yourself for free at nhtsa.gov using the VIN. Open recalls aren't always dealbreakers -- many are simple fixes -- but you deserve to know before you sign anything. We'll always be upfront about recall status on any vehicle we sell.
04
What interest rate can I expect on a used car loan?
Used car rates are typically a bit higher than new car rates because the vehicle's value depreciates faster and lenders take on slightly more risk. Your rate will depend on your credit score, loan term and the age of the vehicle. We work with a broad network of lenders and will submit your application to multiple banks to find the most competitive rate available for your situation. If your credit union has already pre-approved you, bring that rate in and we'll try to beat it.
05
What's included in the out-the-door price?
The out-the-door price includes the vehicle price, sales tax (based on your registered zip code in California), DMV title and registration fees and our document fee. We'll provide a complete written breakdown before you sign a single page. No surprises.
06
Can I buy a used car if I have bad credit, a past bankruptcy or a repossession?
Possibly -- and it's always worth exploring. Lenders weigh your full financial picture, not just a single number. We'll gather your information, present it to our lender network and be straightforward with you about what's available.
A larger down payment can make a significant difference in these situations, and there may be steps you can take to strengthen your position before buying.
07
What is GAP insurance and do I need it?
GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection) covers the difference between what you still owe on your loan and your vehicle's actual cash value if it's totaled or stolen.
Since used cars can depreciate faster than your loan balance in the early months, GAP is worth serious consideration -- especially if you're financing with a small down payment or over a longer term.
08
What warranty comes with a used car?
It depends on the vehicle. A Toyota Certified Used Vehicle includes factory-backed comprehensive and powertrain coverage. Non-certified used vehicles may still have remaining factory warranty depending on age and mileage.
We'll walk you through exactly what's in place on any vehicle you're considering, and we can discuss extended service agreement options if you want additional coverage beyond what's included.
09
Are wear-and-tear items like brakes and tires covered?
No -- wear and tear items like brakes, tires, wiper blades and filters are considered normal maintenance and are not covered under warranty or service agreements.
What is covered is mechanical failure of components that break unexpectedly. It's an important distinction, and we're happy to walk you through exactly what's included and excluded on any coverage you're considering.
